Ocado - comment
There are changes in how consumers shop, and as a response, all supermarkets now have a convenience strategy. The primary driver for the supermarket's convenience strategy is seeking a higher gross margin, but there is an element of responding to how customers shop. Immediate fulfilment (e.g. Deliveroo) is just the zenith of convenience strategy. Having your weekly shop delivered is not going to be supplanted by daily Deliveroo shopping. Pricing your weekly shopping basket on Deliveroo vs Ocado or Morrisons is a chastening experience. What is true is that the gross margin pickup from convenience and immediate fulfilment is subject to the same competition laws as all retail strategies.
Ocado Retail (the M&S JV) does see same-day delivery as an improvement area for the JV. Having developed the immediate fulfilment app (Zoom) for Ocado.
